10th Grade Entry 2

DRSS has exposed me to science and engineering careers through projects. The American School Life Project in Chinese class is a vlog style video comparing American and Chinese school life. The first thing we did was research differences between Chinese and American school life. After research, we wrote our script in English then translated it to Chinese. When our script was finalized, we started to create a storyboard. The storyboard made us think about where and how long it would take us to film. When the storyboard was finalized, we filmed in and outside of class for time lapses.  Once we got all of our footage, we used an editor no one in the group had used before. We ran into many complications but we were able to figure it out. All of these steps in my group lead us to create a final video.

Our storyboards show our collaboration of figuring out what is the best location to film. Collaboration is a skill utilized in many fields. The storyboard also displays the script which requires writing skills. Writing skills are also utilized in many fields.

The footage shows our growth in the acting position. Even thought acting in particular is not used in all fields, presenting is and they are very similar. You have to learn to memorize and present in engaging ways to captivate your audience. In the footage, you can see me saying me lines to convey a difference between Chinese and American school life. In some piece of footage, I blink or look to the side to remember or make unnecessary movements, which I improved on for the final product.

Our final video displays our learning ability. In my group none of us had worked with the specific editor, but we learned how to use it quickly. In the real world, you have to adapt to your situations and we did this while making our video. In the end, we were able to use the editor and create a final video from all of our footage.

This year I job shadowed at the Wright-Patt Air Force Base with someone who works in biomaterials. Science related careers need research so you understand what you are doing, so doing prior research before doing a large project is an important skill used in the real world. While creating our scripts, we received feedback. It is important to get feedback while you are working on a project so you can make it better. Therefore, feedback is another important asset of the real world.  Even translating our script is important, if we want people to have access to information then they’d have to understand it. The main complication my group had with this project was when editing. However, after putting our heads together and sometimes getting others involved, we overcame the problem. Problem solving is need in any career.
